Frequently asked questions.
What is Microblading?
Microblading is a form of permanent makeup where a small blade is used to create thin hair-like strokes throughout a persons brows, giving the illusion of a full, natural brow. It looks most natural on clients who have full brow hair, and are wanting to perfect their shape and add natural fullness. The more hair you have, the more natural it will appear.
This procedure is ideal for those who prefer a super natural look. If currently fill your brows in daily, or you are hoping to ditch the brow makeup entirely ,you are better suited for a combination or ombré brow.
Microblading heals best on young, normal/dry skin. Those with combination/oily or aging skin are not candidates for microblading, and are better suited for a combination or ombré brows.
Am I a good candidate for Microblading?
If you are or have any of the following, I do NOT recommend getting your brows microbladed:
Anyone under 18 years of age
Using any skin care products that contain any retinol, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxyls
Have had a Chemical peels or PRP facial (within 60 days of treatment )
Have had Facial laser treatment (within 60 days of treatment)
Pregnant or nursing (we recommend waiting two months after nursing due to hormonal changes for optimal healed results)
History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring
Epilepsy, MRSA, or lupus
Chemotherapy (at least a year out and requires doctor's clearance)
Diabetic (requires doctor's clearance)
Viral infections or diseases
Pacemaker or major heart problems
Organ transplant
Had botox in the last two weeks
Skin irritations or psoriasis near the treated area (rashes, sunburn, acne, etc.)
Using Accutane (must be off for one year)
Uncontrolled high blood pressure
Poor general health
Allergy to epinephrine, dermacaine, benzyl alcohol, lidocaine, or tetracaine
Currently taking antibiotics
What do I need to do to prepare for my brow appointment?
There are a couple simple things you need to do before your appointment to make sure your skin and brows are ready to rumble. The goal is to give your skin the best chance to soak in the pigment and to decrease the amount of bleeding.
Do not pick/tweeze/wax/tint your brows for at lease one week before
Do not tan at least two weeks before
Do not have any type of facial at least 2 weeks before
Do not exercise within 24 hrs prior
Do not have botox at least 3 weeks before
Do not take fish oil or vitamin E one week before
Do not drink alcohol 48 hours before
Do not consume coffee/caffiene 24 hours before
Do not take aspirin/ibuprofen/or any other blood thinners 48 hours before
What can I expect during my appointment?
First off, I absolutely love seeing my clients and just am so thankful that you trust me with your brows.
So here is what you can expect when you come see me…
Before pictures will be taken with your consent.
Mapping of your shape and color design (this usually takes the majority of the appointment, because of how important it is that we get a shape that YOU love.)
I will then numb your brows with a topical ointment (it takes about 15-20 minutes to kick in)
While we are waiting for your brows to numb, you will fill out some paperwork and consent forms.
Microblading Procedure
After pictures will be taken
Lastly, I will explain your after-care and send you home with instructions and a kit, so that you can give those beautiful brows the best chance to heal properly.
How do you decide my shape and color?
I will map out the shape of your brows based on the dimensions of your face and most importantly, your preferences. You make the final approval of your brow shape before we begin the actual procedure. I will also match the pigment to your natural brow color as close as possible. If you have a naturally blond brow, I will help you decide on a darker shade of pigment that will look the best.
Will it hurt?
The goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Before the procedure, numbing cream will be applied to your brows. With each additional pass, more numbing cream will be applied if needed. If at any point you start to experience any pain, I will stop and apply more numbing cream. You will experience some pulling and pressure, but the goal is to feel no pain. From my own experience, it is less painful than getting a traditional tattoo, but slightly more painful than plucking out your eyebrows. The amount of pain and discomfort really just depends on your own pain thresh hold, how sensitive your skin is, and how nervous you are about the procedure.
What do I need to do for my after-care?
I will be giving you detailed instructions for your after-care that you will receive at your appointment, but you can prepare to do the following:
Stay out of the sun for at least 30 days. wear a hat and sunscreen.
Avoid pools, got tubs, saunas, lakes, etc for at least 2 weeks
Avoid sweating for at least 2 weeks. Sweat can affect your pigment color.
Avoid brow makeup, tints, or other facial treatments for at least 2 weeks.
Avoid anti-aging or acne products, on or around your brows for at least 30 days. These will almost immediately fade or change your pigment color.
Do not itch/touch/pick off any scabs from your brows.
What is the healing process like?
The first 8 weeks after your procedure will be essential for your brows to heal properly.
Day 1: Minor redness or swelling around the treated area is normal, and typically goes away within 24 hours.
Day 1-3: Within 72 hours the pigment in the skin will oxidize, making the brows look darker and warmer (red) than they were initially. Pigment typically fades anywhere from 20-40% once fully healed.
Day 3-4: You may notice light scabbing and flaking on the treated area. This is normal! Do not pick at the brows. Doing so will result in loss of pigment in those areas and can cause scarring.
Day 4-10: Once all the flaking is complete (usually around day 10), the brows will appear much lighter.
Between 4-8 weeks, your brows will be fully healed. Whatever pigment that does not return will be addressed at your 2nd session appointment.
How often do I need a touch up?
I mean it is obviously up to you, I highly recommend getting a touch up every 6-24 months after your second session. My clients typically like to get a yearly color refresh to enforce that shape and color, and keep your brows looking just how you want them to. Ultimately, any semi-permenant cosmetic is going to require touch-ups to keep the color looking fresh and full.
Can you fix or touch up my brows if they were previously done by another artist?
I want to be able to say yes to everyone that comes to me in need of brow help, but unfortunately there are times that I will have to say no. The best thing to do is to email me a picture of your brows or come in for a consultation (15-30 minutes long), so that we can accurately assess the previous work and determine what will need to be done to get your brows looking the way you want them to.
Can men get their brows done?
Microblading for men is totally a thing. I think its awesome. Obviously, not all men, just like not all women, need their eyebrows groomed…but some definitely do. Those that may have damaged hair follicles or thinning eyebrows, or those that just are not so into their brow shape. I feel like a lot of men may be embarrassed or ashamed to get their eyebrows micro bladed, because of the stigma revolving around men and cosmetics. heres what I have to say to those people, “Screw that”. If its something that boost your self-confidence and self-esteem and self-love that DO IT.
